Ontario County Democrats report record fundraising and voter enthusiasm following reorganization

The Ontario County Democratic Committee (OCDC) is riding a wave of momentum after its biannual reorganization meeting on Sept. 18, where the group elected new officers and reported its largest fundraising haul to date. More than 75 committee members gathered to re-elect John Hurley as chair, Liz Yockel as secretary, and Thomas White as treasurer, while Maria Bucci was chosen as the new vice chair.

The highlight of the meeting was news of the committee’s latest fundraiser, which brought in over $11,000 in donations—an all-time high for the group. The surge in financial support mirrors growing voter interest and engagement, according to committee leaders, who are gearing up for what many see as a critical election cycle.

“There is real energy and excitement with voters right now,” Bucci said, noting that even local Republicans are expressing a desire for change and stepping up to help. “People want to make a difference, and they’re getting involved in ways we haven’t seen before.”

The committee also addressed the high demand for campaign signs, particularly for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz, whose names top the national ticket. OCDC is working to restock Harris-Walz signs, as well as signs for local candidates like Scott Comegys (running for New York Senate), Dave Wagenhauser (U.S. Congress), and Erin Skinner and John Bringewatt (both vying for seats on the New York State Supreme Court).

Chair John Hurley said the enthusiasm in Ontario County reflects a broader desire for change at both the state and national levels. “We are thrilled to be Democrats in this county at such a pivotal time,” Hurley remarked. “Electing Democrats—from the local courts to Congress—means better outcomes for everyone, and we’re committed to making that happen.”

The meeting also served as a reminder for Ontario County residents to register to vote before the October 26 deadline. Early voting runs from October 26 to November 3, with Election Day set for November 5.
