Ontario County Democrats Support Rule of Law, Concerned with Republican Attacks on Justice System

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y., May 31, 2024 – The Ontario County Democratic Committee (OCDC) is gratified that the rule of law was upheld in a Manhattan courtroom yesterday, when a jury of average Americans found ex-president Donald Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records with the intent to commit election interference. Trial by jury is a judicial process started in the Massachusetts Bay Colony almost four hundred years ago; this jury of twelve took their civic duty seriously and responsibly, and showed that all Americans are equal under the law.

Unfortunately, Republican representatives, including our own Claudia Tenney, continue to support this convicted felon. Instead of distancing themselves from a criminal, they are railing against the American judicial system, declaring that the trial was a “sham” and saying the verdict was “rigged.” Tenney’s statement says, “He [Judge Merchan] imposed unnecessary and unconstitutional gag orders on President Trump, effectively silencing him and hindering his ability to campaign freely.” This remark is completely false; Justice Merchan contradicted assertions like these directly.

Chair of the OCDC John Hurley said, “We are deeply concerned that our Republican representatives are using this verdict to attack our justice system and propagate lies about it. We in Ontario County welcome conservative- and Republican-leaning voters who embrace the rule of law and ask them to reject the Trumpism that has taken over their party. Unfortunately, a convicted felon can still be elected and serve as President of the United States, even while in prison. So please, join us and keep Trump, a known criminal, out of office in 2024.”
